When We See Us. Could we be flashier, so that we’re seen better? Could we speak louder, so that we can be heard better? Does everyone have the same voice? Does everyone have the same opportunities?

In the exhibition When We See Us, a guide takes children on a tour of paintings by artists from Africa and the African diaspora from the early 20th century to the present day. Children’s perception and sensory experience are paramount, and they will experiment with a range of materials and techniques in the exhibition rooms, among the works of art.

Pupils will:

✓ Explore paintings and stories by artists from Africa and the African diaspora
✓ Discover black self-representations using themes such as everyday life, joy and emancipation
✓ Develop their creativity using their senses
✓ Learn to express their emotions
✓ Develop their knowledge through contact with works of art
✓ Learn to express their perceptions, feelings, ideas and imagination visually
