An evening around the publication of the book Draw for Change, written by Catherine Vuylsteke who chronicled the life stories of six remarkable female cartoonists hailing from every corner of the globe, and the eponymous filmseries by Vincent Coen and Guillaume Vandenberghe.
Each of these female cartoonists fearlessly challenge patriarchal doctrines, and regressive ideologies in their work. With humor, courage, and originality, they confront the world head-on.
Barbara Debusschere, a journalist from De Morgen, engages in a conversation with Catherine Vuylsteke about her book. It will be followed by a screening of the film We Are Fire (2023) with and about cartoonist Mar Maremoto.
We Are Fire – Mar Maremoto (Mexico) by Karen Vázquez Guadarrama
Mar Maremoto is a vibrant force of queerness and punk energy, unapologetically herself. Through her dynamic and emotionally charged artwork, from captivating cartoons to striking murals, she fearlessly delves into the profound impact of machismo, the anguish of fat-shaming, and the struggles of not conforming to societal norms.
Most importantly, the film seeks to unravel the reasons behind the high femicide rate and explore avenues for bringing about change.
