On December 5, trumpeter Erik Truffaz and flamenco jazz phenomenon Antonio Lizana will present a reinterpretation of Miles Davis' iconic masterpiece “Sketches of Spain.”
“Sketches of Spain” was born out of Miles Davis' fascination with Spanish folk music and the country's cultural heritage. Influences from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, flamenco, and religious processions, among others, merged into a poetic and visionary album that marked a turning point in the opening of jazz to world music.
More than sixty years later, this masterpiece is taking on a new form. Erik Truffaz, one of the leading trumpeters in electro-jazz, combines his lyrical trumpet playing with the fiery expression of Antonio Lizana. Lizana is one of the most celebrated representatives of the new flamenco-jazz scene in southern Spain. Their meeting resulted in an ambitious project that brings “Sketches of Spain” back to life, with respect for the original and a distinctly contemporary signature.
This concert is not only a tribute, but also a preview of the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis in 2026 – the “Prince of Darkness” who found his light in the Spain of Cervantes and García Lorca.
