The pianist Fred Hersch’s 70th birthday is confrontational proof that time flies so fast someone should give it a speeding ticket. He may be a late bloomer – he didn’t make his major public breakthrough until his solo albums in the nineties – but the title of his autobiography says it all: Good Things Happen Slowly. The days when Hersch played alongside Toots Thielemans and Art Framer are long gone, but those who honour the memory will not forget the past. During his European tour, he invites one musician for a duet at each concert. At Bozar, that will be none other than Sullivan Fortner. You may have seen the Grammy winner with Cécile McLorin Salvant or his own trio, but this unique concert will be a harmonious clash of two generations.
