To view Gerhard Richter’s work is to take a journey through the history of art: with his references to both the great masters and the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, he explores seemingly contradictory categories of painting, synthesising them into a body of work that is exceptional in its scope and in the level of technical mastery acquired through an academic training that he has constantly reinvented

At ease with all formats, capable of moving from explosive abstraction to the most delicate figuration, from the austerity of monochrome to shimmering palettes, this painter also bears witness to his country’s history, intertwined with his personal memories. From a very early age, he explored the nature of images, drawing on an ‘Atlas’ of small found photographs, which he incorporated into his pictorial practice. These diverse paths enrich one another, spanning a broad spectrum between painting, photography, figuration and abstraction. Despite this variety of approaches, a remarkable coherence holds this colossal body of work together. A journey through the world of a giant who has dominated the art scene for over half a century.
