England, 1580. A penniless Latin teacher meets Agnes, a free-spirited young woman. Fascinated by one another, they embark on a passionate affair before marrying and having three children. Whilst Will tries his luck as a playwright in London, Agnes takes on the household chores alone. When tragedy strikes, the couple, once deeply united, begins to falter. But it is from their shared ordeal that the inspiration for a universal masterpiece will emerge.

Chloé Zhao is a Chinese director, screenwriter and producer renowned for her neorealist style, often using non-professional actors. She made history by winning the Oscar for Best Director for Nomadland (2020), becoming one of the few women to receive this honour.
