In her studio, pioneering painter Hilma af Klint broke all the rules she had learned at the Stockholm Academy of Art and invented abstraction at the end of the 19th century, before Kandinsky, Mondrian or Malevich. After many attempts, understanding that her era would never accept her audacity, one thousand three hundred paintings were carefully rolled up and stored out of sight. Today, the movie Hilma explores the enigmatic life of the artist who stipulated in her will that her abstract work could not be revealed to the public until twenty years after her death.

Born in Stockholm, Lasse Hallström began his career in television, then directed several music videos, notably for ABBA, before releasing My Life as a Dog (1987) which earned him two Academy Award nominations. His next films were Chocolat (2001) with Johnny Depp and Dear John (2011).
