‘I dance with my camera on my finger - Sardono W. Kusumo’

I dance with my camera on my finger is a collection of archive material by Sardono W Kusumo. Taken with his 8-mm camera, Sardono W. Kusumo explored his ethnological negatives from the 1970s when he travelled through many islands throughout Indonesia, as well as some countries in Asia and Europe. The film captures Nias society, the Kecak Dance in Bali, the Borobudur Temple, choreography by Sardono W. Kusumo under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Affandi’s drawings in Japan, and much more besides. Since the 1970s when he was a young artist, Sardono W. Kusumo has been actively using his film camera but now explores the digital medium. Documentary photos taken by the maestro, Sardono W. Kusumo, have become invaluable archives, showing how life values, arts and cultures are recorded personally by the eye of camera. The digital transfer of the 8-mm negatives was commissioned by the Singapore International Festival of Arts, and was exhibited for the first time at the Malay Heritage Center, Singapore in 2016. A newly edited film entitled I dance with my camera on my finger, using the archive material, will make its journey to EUROPALIA 2017.
