discourses and prospects

At a moment when the European Union’s foundations are put into question – with a barely tamed euro crisis, a divisive refugee crisis, and growing public disenchantment – it seems more urgent than ever to examine what makes Europe unique.
What unites the people on our continent: culturally, politically, and historically?
The Chair in European Values: Discourses and Prospects, a joint project between the UCL and the UAntwerp, is dedicated to the study of European values. Do we share a common heritage? What to make of value differences between East and West or North and South? How to deal with the current challenge of migration? How to promote a better public appreciation of the interaction between Europe’s unity and diversity? How can the diversification of our cities stimulate cultural exchange and understanding?
Working on the intersection between social science, history, and philosophy, the new Chair aims to provide insights and strategies to students, policy-makers, and the wider public alike.

Programme :

Brief presentation of the chair by the two chair-holders, Noel Clyq (UAntwerpen) and Luuk van Middelaar (UCL)
On-stage conversation with Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, moderated by Béatrice Delvaux (Le Soir).
Conclusion by by Herman Van Rompuy, former European Council President, “Europese waarden vandaag – Les valeurs européennes aujourd’hui”.
