Bozar welcomes you to the Belgian première of director Margarethe Von Trotta’s most recent film. As one of the ‘leading forces’ of the New German Cinema movement, all of her movies focus on courageous female characters, involved in arts, politics and/or philosophy. Her last movie is the portrait of the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann, interpreted by Vicky Krieps.

The remarkable and charismatic Ingeborg Bachmann has conquered the male dominated bastion of German-language literature with her poetry. Though still young, Ingeborg Bachmann is at the peak of her career when she meets the famous playwright Max Frisch. Their love is passionate but professional, and personal friction begins to disrupt the harmony. Struggling with herself, she travels to the desert together with her friends Hans Werner Henze and the young Adolf Opel. On this journey she finds a way back to her writing and to herself.

Margarethe von Trotta started her career as an actress in the late 1960s but quickly gained interest in writing and directing feature films. She became one of Germany’s leading female directors and an integral part of the German ‘Autorenkino’. Her most notable films include The Second Awakening of Christa Klages (1978), Sheer Madness (1983), Three Sisters (1988) and many more. In 2022 she received the European Cinema Lifetime Achievement Award.
