Kamilya Jubran & Sarah Murcia
Singer and oud player Kamilya Jubran and double bassist Sarah Murcia celebrate their twenty-year friendship as a compelling musical duo. On their latest album YOGAL, they once again bring two cultures together: Jubran is Palestinian and rooted in the world of traditional music, while Murcia is French and shaped by jazz. The result is hypnotic timbres paired with eloquent, politically charged lyrics. “The essential thing is not necessarily to understand everything. The essential thing is to be caught in the trap, to grasp the unspeakable,” she explains.
Abdullah Miniawy Trio
Both in the kitchen and in the concert hall, unusual combinations can give rise to unexpected beauty. Two trombones and a tenor? Not exactly your average daily special. Egyptian singer Abdullah Miniawy performs with French trombonists Robinson Khoury and Jules Boittin. The chromatic elements of Arabic music resonate through the trombones, which can ‘glide’ between notes. Miniawy melds classical Arabic singing and Sufism with jazz, opera and experimental sound. His virtuoso voice, dramatic performance style and unifying message have taken him from MoMA to the European Parliament – and now to Bozar.
