‘KUDSI ERGUNER & LÂMEKÂN ENSEMBLE ft. DERYA TÜRKAN’

25 May'19
- 20:00

Turkey

“Lâmekân Ensemble in an initiative which eloquently proves that true musical passion rises beyond all cultural, religious, and geographical borders.” (Kudsi Erguner)

The concert offers a selection of works that includes some of the most moving pieces, both musically and poetically.

The ceremony of the whirling dervishes is viewed as an invitation to the state of ecstasy. There are two stages to the ceremony:
- a meditative part, spent listening to recitations of the Koran, to the ney flute and to chants of praise for the Prophet Muhammad;
- the ecstasy itself, which means transcending the self through an emotion that transcends both joy and worship of beauty. Or a state of grace manifesting itself by listening to the music on the verses of Rumi. These compositions figure among the great masterpieces of Ottoman modal music. The concert offers a selection of works that includes some of the most moving pieces, both musically and poetically. This master of the ney will take to the stage with the Lâmekân Ensemble for this concert at BOZAR, as part of the “Tarab” series on dedication and exaltation in and through music. Lâmekân – which means “non-place”, or a state of divine exaltation – is a young six-piece ensemble from Belgium which performs Turkish classical music. The opulent lifestyle in the vibrant cities of the Ottoman Empire is revived in the performances of Lâmekân, under the expert guidance of musicologist and oud player Tristan Driessens.
