Las Niñas - Pilar Palomero

9 + 10
Jan.'26

Celia, aged 11, attends a Catholic girls’ school in Zaragoza. The arrival of a new classmate from Barcelona turns her world upside down: pop music, first crushes, and a longing for freedom. Set in 1992, Las Niñas captures a double coming of age: that of a girl entering adolescence, and of a Spain torn between Catholic tradition and modernity.

Filmmaker and screenwriter Pilar Palomero has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Spanish cinema. Trained in cinematography, she directed her first short film Noć in 2015. Her debut feature, Las Niñas (2021), was a revelation, winning four Goya Awards. Los Destellos (2024) is her most recent film.

The screening of Las Niñas on 9 January will be introduced by Pilar Palomero. This event forms part of Close-Up: Pilar Palomero, organised within the framework of EUROPALIA ESPAÑA.
