Pärt. Kanon Pokajanen
Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is one of the most frequently performed living composers. He is now 90 years young. With his tranquil and distinctive tintinnabuli style (head straight to Google), he has inspired a new generation of listeners to contemporary music. The largest a cappella choral work in his oeuvre is the impressive Kanon Pokajanen from 1997. Pärt worked on the composition for almost two years to mark the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral. Over the course of nearly two hours, an intense and meditative soundscape unfolds, centred on themes such as penance and redemption. The austere musical language and exceptional vocal intensity make this work a profound, almost ecstatic listening experience, perfectly suited to the Latvian Radio Choir.
