Thomas Demand is a German photographer. Since the 1990s, most of his photographs have been reconstructions of images taken from the press or the internet, abstracted and reproduced in the studio, like an ephemeral stage set of paper and cardboard. Often loaded with political meaning, his reconstructions offer a critique of various subjects.
In 2010, he discovered the archives of the American architect John Lautner (1911-1994), during a residency at the Getty Research Institute, a discovery that took his work in a new direction. For the first time, Demand began to photograph models other than his own. His subjects are no longer historical facts, but real architectural projects transposed into conceptual models and photographed from very close up. Thomas Demand's work has been the subject of numerous monographic exhibitions around the world, and was first exhibited in Belgium at Museum M in Leuven in 2020. A+ and Bozar have invited him to give a special lecture at Bozar on 26 April.
