L’essence des choses

During the first half of the 20th century, various artistic movements reflected a vibrant artistic revival in Belgium: Luminism, Brabant Fauvism, Constructivism, Surrealism and Flemish Expressionism. It was with this latter movement that Jean Brusselmans found himself associated, against his own wishes, as his primary desire – whilst resenting being pigeonholed – was to ‘paint naively, purely and powerfully, to be natural’. Let us set out with Brusselmans in search of the essence of things, as part of the exhibition Jean Brusselmans. Painter by nature at Bozar.
