Genius, megalomania, impossibility. These are some of the adjectives often used to describe the gigantic opera cycle Light, as well as the personality of its avant-garde composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen. He began this monumental 29-hour work with seven operas, four helicopters and hundreds of artists in 1977 and completed it 26 years later. It could never be performed before an audience because of its complexity and a lack of time and budget. In 2019, the National Opera in the Netherlands decided to take on the challenge.

Director Oeke Hoogendijk tells the story of this artistic adventure and meets the people who made it possible to write and perform this work. The film, constructed as a breathtaking epic, is an uncompromising portrait of an all-consuming genius and all he leaves behind.
