‘Meet the Writer: Marieke Lucas Rijneveld’

The young author Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (they/their) is well on their way to becoming a literary icon of the queer movement. Rijneveld, who goes through life as a non-binary, was the first Dutch writer ever to win the International Booker Prize. This marked the international breakthrough for their debut novel The Discomfort of Evening. Their second novel, My Dear Favourite, is also an unprecedented success with numerous translations on the horizon.
Rijneveld does not shy away from any taboos and embraces themes such as love and desire, trauma and loss. At the request of Bozar, they wrote a poem to accompany an etching from the series Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy (1967) by David Hockney. The poem is in the catalogue and the etching is on display in the Bozar exhibition. 
Love and desire are themes that appear in Hockney's work in all sorts of guises. For example, he was already painting homoerotic scenes in the early 1960s. This was a daring step at the time, as it wasn't until 1967 that sex between two men was removed from the English penal code. 
Rijneveld will talk about their work in Bozar but will also make excursions into the work of Hockney.
