Aires Mateus (°1988, PT) is a Portuguese architectural firm led by brothers Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus. Their work is characterised by restraint, clarity, and a poetic use of light and space. With their monumental yet understated architecture, they have built a strong international reputation in contemporary public and cultural projects. Recent works include the Muslim Centre in Bordeaux, the renovation of Parque Mayer and the Teatro Variedades in Lisbon, and the design for the Musée de l’Elysée / Mudac in Lausanne. In Belgium, Aires Mateus completed the UCLouvain Faculty of Architecture in Tournai in 2017. Alongside their practice, Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus teach at the renowned Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio.
