Not long ago, he came to Bozar as our guest for the May Days. But because the Europe expert Luuk van Middelaar still hadn't said all he had to say about our very special continent, we invited him back for a discussion. On more than one occasion in the past ten years, the EU has found itself navigating turbulent waters – the eurozone crisis, the refugee crisis and the Brexit debacle. In his most recent book, Pandemonium: Saving Europe, Luuk van Middelaar shines a light on how, at a point in time when the EU was at risk of losing its relevance, Europe formulated its response to the coronavirus crisis and once again perpetuated its resilience.

Luuk van Middelaar is a leading historian and political philosopher in the Netherlands and Europe. From 2010 to 2015, he worked as a political adviser to the first President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. Luuk van Middelaar is one of the most authoritative thinkers and speakers on all topics concerning the EU.

Van Middelaar will be interviewed by Steven Erlanger (New York Times)
