Mendelssohn Marathon

The famous composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) produced a rich body of work during his short life. As a teenager, he had already composed several important pieces, such as the Octet and the Overture to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. By conducting Bach’s St Matthew Passion for the first time since Bach’s death, he was at the forefront of a true Bach revival. Mendelssohn also wrote a great deal of repertoire for students, including the Kinderstücke. Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1805–1847), his sister, was also a highly talented composer, but her father decided that one composer in the family was enough. It was not until the final year of her life that she published works under her own name. 

On 18 April 2027, the Mendelssohn Marathon will take place at Bozar. Across various venues within the Palace, musicians of all ages and levels – from conservatoire students and professionals to experienced amateurs – will perform pieces from the rich repertoire of the Mendelssohn siblings. The afternoon will conclude with a concert by the Javus Quartett. 

Ahead of the Mendelssohn Marathon, students from the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels will give concerts at our socio-cultural partners in Brussels, including care homes, Cultureghem, Fedasil Oudergem and ABER.
