Who are “NASS EL GHIWANE”

During the 70s, Morocco attracted many hippies including the famous Jimmy Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. The charming little port town of Essaouira aligns in its own way on the same cosmic axis as Woodstock, Kathmandu in Nepal and the Balearic Islands. It brings together mystics and nirvana hunters.

It is in this context – but in Casablanca – that the non-conformists Nass el Ghiwane (bohemian people, people of ecstatic passion) emerge and restore popular Moroccan music to its former glory.
It was in a period marked by the hegemony of Egyptian Tarab (arabic scholarly and classical music which spread to the North African artistic landscape) and Arab-Andalusian music that a new trend took hold.

The Ghiwani movement (driven by the Nass el Ghiwane) is gaining more and more followers and fully asserts its Africanness, its popular and scholarly language (poetic Darija), and the culture of speaking truth.
Thanks to their committed and poetic lyrics reflecting the discomforts of Moroccan youth of the time and their powerful rhythms, played using traditional instruments, they revolutionized Moroccan and Maghreb music and left an indelible mark on the landscape. culture of the country.

The famous American director "Martin SCORSESE" called the group the "Rolling Stones of Africa" and he also purchased the copyright of the song "Ya Sah" to include it in the soundtrack of his film "The Last temptation of Christ.
