The Belgian pianist Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden achieved musical fame when at just 16 years of age he won third prize in the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Since then he has enjoyed a successful career as a soloist and music teacher. He has recorded the complete piano works of Maurice Ravel, making him the ideal candidate to perform the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Ravel composed this work for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein who was maimed during the First World War. The programme includes a number of other popular works by Ravel, of which the Boléro is no doubt the best known. The Symphonic Variations by César Franck will also be performed. The programme opens with a commissioned work by the German composer Ulrich Kreppein.
