Nicolas de Stael, la peinture à vif

A film by François Lévy-Kuentz

Nicolas de Staël imbued his short life with a sense of sacrifice, embodying more than anyone else the intertwining of life and art. Now recognised as one of France’s greatest painters, he never ceased to push his obsession with painting ever further and into new realms, in an effort to exorcise the pain of exile and the harshness of life. Thanks to an exceptional collection of letters recently rediscovered and the exclusive support of his family, this film will shed light on a life entirely devoted to creation, lived at breakneck speed, like a race towards the abyss.
