Okkyung Lee

Adventurous South Korean cellist, composer and improviser Okkyung Lee has been a phenomenon in experimental music for more than twenty-five years. She beguiles audiences with a highly distinctive and intense idiom full of raw, extended techniques. Yet tranquil melodies also emerge from time to time, as evidenced by the album Yeo-Neun. She draws inspiration from a myriad of sources, ranging from noise, classical music and jazz to the traditional music of her homeland. You can hear Lee on more than thirty albums and she has collaborated with leading figures such as Arca, Ellen Fullman, Jenny Hval, Vijay Iyer, Phill Niblock, Bill Orcutt and John Zorn. Bozar and Le Guess Who? have invited Lee to create a brand-new work and engage in a dialogue with the thrilling timbres of South Korean instruments such as the gayageum, haegeum and daegeum.
