‘Omar Ba’

AFROPOLITAN FESTIVAL

Omar Ba was born in Senegal in 1977 and lives and works between Dakar and Genève. His paintings are produced with a permanent quest for hybridity, associating oils, watercolor, ink and pencil, and corrugated carton support. They evoke political and social topics such as exploitation, interdependence, the question of tolerance and dialogue. With an apparent chromatic simplicity – iced blues or bright reds on black or white backgrounds, the artist declines fantastic and scary bestiaries on abstract motifs, in which emblems of power, luxurious vegetation and warrior details intermingle. Ba’s iconography mobilizes personal metaphors and ancestral or poetic references. His enigmatic work refuses any didactical narration and, touches upon the expression of the subconscious and a symbolic apprehension of reality.

Omar Ba was trained at the school of Fine Arts in Dakar and then Geneva. These last few years, he has participated in numerous collective exhibitions, the most recent ones being the Summer Exhibition 2014 at the Royal Academy of Arts (London) and the Dara Biennial in 2014. His works have entered several public collections, including that of the Centre National des National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) in France, the Collection Nationale Suisse (Bâle) et the Louvre (Abu Dhabi).
