Curated by pianist Claudine Simon, this hybrid piece—somewhere between a concert, shadow theater, and visual installation—subtly engages the imagination of young and old alike with a playful ingenuity imbued with poetic grace.
A versatile musician, pianist, and improviser, Claudine Simon—whose practice draws on the full range of the piano’s capabilities—explores an artistic field at the intersection of several disciplines (music, dance, theater, visual arts). Suitable for all ages 6 and up, her new creation, Un pays supplémentaire, invites the audience to watch a small train traveling across the stage among objects derived from the piano (keys, hammers…) or used to “prepare” it (clothespins, brushes…). Ingeniously evocative, this stage setup produces sounds and, through various lighting effects, casts shadows along the train’s path. Stimulating both the ear and the eye, the piece sharpens the perception of young and old alike and subtly sparks their imagination.
For students, this concert is a unique opportunity to:
- Discover how sound can be produced in inventive ways using a transformed instrument and everyday objects
- Explore the connection between music, light, and movement, and understand how different artistic disciplines can interact
- Develop imagination and active listening by observing a work that stimulates both the ear and the eye
