After spending some time abroad, an architect returns to his home in Split, only to commit suicide soon after. Finding an audio track among the things he left behind, one of his friends tries to solve the mystery of his friend’s act.
The only feature film by Ivan Martinac, one of the key figures of Croatian avantgarde and underground film scene. House on the Sand is a late modernist classic of Croatian cinema. Its mise-en-scene and framing are heavily influenced by the architecture and interior design of the Split 3 residential area, where the story takes place.

Ivan Martinac (1938 – 2005) was a versatile artist: filmmaker, poet, author and painter, among other things. He studied architecture, but specialised in cinema, directing over 50 short films which influenced underground, experimental and kino-club scenes in Split, Beograd and Zagreb.
