Bernstein and Karajan regarded Mahler's Ninth Symphony as one of the finest works ever composed. Mahler wrote the composition shortly after the death of his daughter. Its metaphysical gravitas makes the work a daunting challenge for both conductor and orchestra. The maturity and musicianship required has been demonstrated by Daniel Harding many times over. Conducting the distinguished Orchestre de Paris, he is also presenting the Belgian premiere of Widmann's Viola Concerto. Widmann was the dedicatee of a BOZAR "portrait" during the previous season.
