Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, composed between the Eroica and his monumental Fifth, is appreciated for its modest dimensions and cheerful atmosphere. Schumann described the piece as “a slender daughter of Greece between two Northern giants”. Emilie Mayer, sometimes called “the female Beethoven”, was both a fully-fledged composer, a sculptor and the co-director of the Berlin Opera. She devoted her life to music, writing no fewer than eight symphonies and seven remarkable overtures. This outpouring of Romantic music will end with Mendelssohn’s Second Violin Concerto, in which the talented Russian violinist Alena Baeva makes her debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège.
