Two films by Sharon Lockhart

This film will be screened extra muros at Cinema RITCS.

Sharon Lockhart (1964) is a photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker born in Norwood, Massachusetts, who lives and works in Los Angeles. Through a diverse practice that includes installation, photography, film, painting and sculpture, Sharon Lockhart creates fascinating and complex interactions between the various media and forms she employs, the stories she encounters, and the communities and people with whom she collaborates.

She presents two films:

Podwórka, 2009
16mm film transferred to HD, colour/sound, 31’

Podwórka takes as its subject matter the courtyards of Łódź, Poland, and the children that inhabit them. In six different courtyards throughout the city of Łódź, we see parking lots, storage units, and metal armatures become jungle gyms, sandboxes, and soccer fields in the children’s world. A series of fleeting interludes within city life, Podwórka is both a study of a specific place and an evocation of the resourcefulness of childhood.

Rudzienko, 2016
HD video installation (color/sound), 56'

Rudzienko was shot over two years in collaboration with the residents of the Youth Center for Sociotherapy in Rudzienko, Poland. The resulting film features a range of conversations, from the philosophical to everyday teenage concerns, and depicts actions both theatrical and mundane that voice the girls’ rich humanity.

The screenings will be followed by a discussion between Sharon Lockhart and Laurence Rassel (Director of ERG and co-curator of Chantal Akerman: Travelling).
