‘Q&A with Ken Loach’

British director Ken Loach is now 84, but he and his regular scriptwriter Paul Laverty are still making stubbornly engaged films that present a deeply human view of social injustices today. His films seem more relevant and caustic than ever, as Golden Palm winner I, Daniel Blake (2016) demonstrates: an indictment of the injustice of the British social security system. 59-year-old joiner Daniel Blake has worked hard most of his life but is now reliant on government support for the first time. His path crosses that of single mother Katie and her two young children. They both quickly find themselves in a social no man’s land, entangled in the bureaucratic barbed wire of a society in which poverty and vulnerability are increasingly seen as ‘your own fault’.
