Poetry And Rhythm: Tribute to Fela

What might eloquent voices from contemporary poetry and spoken word movements have to say about the legacy of Fela Kuti? Come and find out at Inua Ellams' Rhythm And Poetry Party, a nostalgic, no-clutter, no-fuss, night of hip hop-inspired poems and favourite hip hop songs. Let’s launch the Afropolitan Festival!

The format is simple. Ten poets share a poem that engages any aspect of hip hop culture and dedicated to one of her/his heroes or heroines. After each poet, the DJ will play two hip hop songs of the poet's choosing that link to the poem.

Presented in collaboration with Joy Slam and the SLAMEKE non-profit organisation*, this special party focuses on afrobeat and hip hop. It gathers poets and slammers from six countries (Belgium, UK, Germany, Gabon, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire) who express themselves in English, French and Dutch. Crossing linguistic and geographic boundaries, the ten poets reflect on Fela Kuti’s legacy, and what it means to be Afropolitan in 2020.

With: Inua Ellams, Joy Slam Poésie, Summer Pearl, Amee Slam, Djamile Mama Gao, Larry Rasputine Officiel, Candice Nembhard, Tunde Adefioye, Sukina Douglas, Rokia bamba

*The slammers Amée, Larry Essouma and Djamile Mama Gao are invited to Belgium in the framework of the project “Le Slam Pour Construire des Ponts”, curated by Joy Slam and led by the Slameke non-profit organisation.
