In a rural Peruvian village high up in the mountains, the 14 year old boy Segundo shares a unique bond with his father Noé, a master maker of ‘retablos’ (artisan story boxes). Noé is a respected artisan and Segundo’s role model. With loving eye for detail, Noé carries out his craft, and is preparing his son to follow in his footsteps. One day, Segundo accidentally observes his father in a situation that doesn't fit in the dominant masculine culture of the community and threatens their special relationship.

Alvaro Delgado-Aparicio studied at the London School of Economics and MIT before going on to attend the London Film Academy. After making two successful short films, Retablo is his debut feature. It was screened at the 2017 Festival de Cine de Lima where it won the prize for Best Peruvian Film and it received a special mention at the 68th Berlinale in the Generation+ section.
