Beethoven, Brahms & Shaw
Johannes Brahms hesitated for a long time before finally publishing his string quartets in 1873. The music reveals the pride with which he engaged in the tradition of great masters such as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. For example, the opening motif to his String Quartet No. 2 is a play on the violinist Joseph Joachim’s motto: “Frei aber einsam”. Besides this piece by Brahms, the Schumann Quartett will play an early string quartet by Ludwig van Beethoven. The contemporary composer Caroline Shaw was also inspired by this tradition: she has written a new string quartet based on Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 6.
