A Musical Discussion Between North and South Indian Traditions
The North and South Indian musical traditions have developed almost independently of each other since the 15th century. In the north with Arab influences; in the south remaining more faithful to local traditions. At Bozar, the two traditions meet thanks to two masters in their respective fields: Shahid Parvez on the sitar and Shashank Subramanyam on the bamboo flute. Parvez belongs to the seventh generation of musicians in the Etawah tradition (from North India). He is acclaimed as one of the most pioneering sitar players alive today. The career of Subramanyam, born in the southern state of Karnataka, has already spanned four decades and included collaborations with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia. For Parvez and Subramanyam to share the stage for this cultural exchange is quite simply unique. They will be joined by percussionists on the tabla and mridangam.
