In the Footsteps of Lise Cristiani

With her expressive playing and boundless passion, Sol Gabetta and a group of friends explore the mysterious life of Lise Cristiani. As the first professional female concert cellist, Cristiani broke several taboos in the 19th century – when playing a cello was seen as improper for women – and inspired composers such as Mendelssohn to embrace the solo potential of the instrument. She only lived to the age of 26, but her virtuosity laid the foundations for later masterpieces by Saint-Saëns, Lalo andTchaikovsky. Gabetta’s quest to follow in Cristiani’s footsteps is supported by a documentary and album release. History, innovation and emotion go hand in hand. With work that was once on Cristiani's pupiter: Gioachino Rossini, Adrien François Servais, Alexander Batta, George Onslow, Jacques Offenbach, ...

A signing session with Sol Gabetta will take place at the end of this concert.
