Flying with Angels
The two-time Grammy winner Suzanne Vega is widely praised as one of the best songwriters of her generation and a key figure in the folk revival of the early 1980s. Since the release of her highly acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1985, she has continued to write and record contemporary songs that have become timeless classics. Her bold song Luka, inspired by Lou Reed, touches on the sensitive topic of child abuse, while the soft ballad Marlene on the Wall was inspired by a poster of Marlene Dietrich that offered her comfort after a breakup.Tom’s Diner, a unique a cappella track, became a major hit in nightclubs after being remixed by British dance duo DNA. Vega will be accompanied by her longtime guitarist Gerry Leonard (known for his work with David Bowie) and cellist Stephanie Winters.
Her songs feel like stories masterfully told, offering a poetic perspective on city life, ordinary people, and real-life topics. Vega’s witty and pure songwriting remains as recognizable, unique, and profound as when she first hit the airwaves 30 years ago.
