Among the countless delights of Western music are some hidden nuggets of the English repertoire for violin and lute from the turn of the 18th century. This duo of intrepid young musicians has been digging for gold, revealing the gentle melancholy of instrumental arias by John Eccles, Niccola Matteis, Daniel Purcell and his famous cousin, Henry. With The Mad Lover (harmonia mundi, 2020), violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte – a founding member of Le Consort alongside Justin Taylor, and a nominee in the ‘instrumental soloist revelations’ category of the 2020 Victoires de la Musique Classique – and lutenist Thomas Dunford bring a breath of fresh air to the international Baroque music scene.
