Set in 1937's Soviet Union, a smuggled prison letter from Bryansk, revealing forced confessions by the secret service, brings an elderly Bolshevik prisoner into contact with a young prosecutor. Their tense reunion takes place amid Stalin's Great Terror and reveals a shared history and the human toll of the regime they served.
Based on a novella by political activist Georgy Demidov and adapted by Loznitsa into a grim portrait of a totalitarian regime under which at least 700,000 citizens were purged, the film shows how the modern heirs of that regime continue to oppress citizens and threaten neighbouring countries.

Sergei Loznitsa is a Ukrainian filmmaker known for his work in both documentary and fiction. Raised in Kyiv, he first studied applied mathematics before graduating with honours from VGIK in Moscow in 1997. Loznitsa has been a regular guest of Bozar and his films have been presented at major festivals. His latest film, Two Prosecutors, premiered in Cannes’ 2025 main competition and won the François Chalais Prize.
