Un Poeta - Simón Mesa Soto

Oscar Restrepo is a middle-aged drunkard who still lives with his mother and has lost the respect of his daughter. But once he was a promising voice in Colombian literature with a book that earned him an award at the age of 24. Whimsical and ageing, he has succumbed to the cliché of the cursed poet. His encounter with Yurlady, a teenager from a humble background in whom he sees growing potential, brings a little light into his daily life. But drawing her into the world of poets may not be the best course of action.
Simón Mesa Soto (Medellín, 1986) studied audiovisual communication at the University of Antioquia. In 2014, he earned his master’s degree in film directing from the London Film School. His graduation film Leidi, won the Palme d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. His second short film Madre, was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Amparo was his first feature film in 2021, followed by Un Poeta in 2025 which won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section.
