‘Cine-concert: Varieté’

One of the biggest export successes of the Weimar Republic was the 1925 vaudeville melodrama Varieté, directed by Ewald André Dupont. Oscar-winner Emil Jannings (as Huller) and sensational trapeze scenes stunned audiences. Karl Freund's innovative cinematography, between expressionism and film noir, also earned Varieté an important place in film history. In collaboration with the Franco-German television channels ZDF, ARTE, as well as 2eleven music film, the Belgian National Orchestra, conducted by Dirk Brossé, provides this silent film with music. The music was recently composed by the Soviet-Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, making this the fourth time she has written a soundtrack for a silent film.
