‘Violin Phase x 3’

The Dancefilmfestival Brussels is this year presenting historical and recent belgian films under the name ‘Belgian Beauties’.

On the opening night of the 12th edition of the festival, we will screen three filmed versions of Violin Phase.

Violin Phase is a choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created in 1981 to music by Steve Reich. Her minimalist and rigorous choices instantly established her as a demanding and resolutely modern choreographer.

The three films are made in different locations in Brussels over a period of 30 years: the same choreography to the same music, danced by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and filmed by Wolfgang Kolb, Eric Pauwels and Thierry De Mey. Each director has created his own image of this choreography, which can be considered one of the pillars of Belgian contemporary dance.
