Donghwa, a poet in his thirties, drops off Junhee, his girlfriend of three years, at her house and marvels at how large it is. He intends to look around the front yard and then leave, but by chance he runs into Junhee’s father, and ends up spending the entire day with them. He visits a Buddhist temple by the river, and eats a stew made from a chicken Junhee’s father caught himself. As the characters continually pair off to have one-to-one conversations, they test all sorts of bonds: sisterly, parental, marital, romantic, social and enviously professional.
Hong Sangsoo first gained attention in 1996 with The Day a Pig Fell into the Well. The Power of Kangwon Province marked his debut at Cannes, where he became a regular. Over the years, he has earned numerous international awards for his work. Hong Sangsoo has crafted a rich, sophisticated filmography, having directed over 30 films. His work blends humour with deep explorations of everyday life, psychology, and metaphysics in subtle, elegant ways.
