The Wheelchair - Marco Ferreri

Carte Blanche: Albert Serra

The screening on the 7th of December will be introduced by Albert Serra.

A retired man dreams of owning a small electric wheelchair, like all his friends. His family refuses, seeing the idea as whimsical. He sells his belongings to pursue that “dream.”

A true grotesque tragedy, laced with Spanish black humor. The film subtly portrays traits of Francoist society that remain recognizable today: marginalization, infantilization of old age, picaresque cunning, selfishness — all presented with a tone that is both whimsical and light.

Awarded the International Critics’ Prize – FIPRESCI at Venice in 1960, the film owes much to its screenwriter Rafael Azcona, a sharp and incisive chronicler of everyday Spain, in the tradition of Goya.
