In this comedy set on the university campus in Delhi in the 70s, we follow Annie, a struggling architecture student whose eccentric ideas and jokes get him into trouble. Based on screenwriter (and actress) Arundhati Roy's own experiences as a student, the film captures the humour, rebellion and anxieties of an English-speaking student subculture rarely seen in Indian cinema. The film was a multiple winner at the 1989 Indian National Film Awards and features the now legendary Shah Rukh Khan and Manoj Bajpayee in early supporting roles. Recently restored (with a premiere at the 2026 Berlinale), this rebellious portrait of youth, ambition and academic life will surely win over a large audience.
Pradip Krishen was born in 1949 in New Delhi, India. He is a director and writer, known for Massey Sahib (1986), Electric Moon (1992) and In the Days of the Raj (1986). He is married to Arundhati Roy.
