BEETHOVEN 2020

Beethoven described his Symphony No. 7 as “my most excellent symphony”. And the public agrees with him, as it is considered one of the composer’s most beloved works. In addition, Nelson Freire, one of the greatest pianists of our time, will be honouring us with his presence to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. He first played this piece in the 1950s and knows it through and through.
This evening’s special occasion – and indeed throughout 2020 – is the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. However, if we are to believe Beethoven this is the 248th anniversary of his birth year: the composer stubbornly asserted that he was born in 1772, even when he was presented with evidence to the contrary in the form of his birth certificate. The real reason for this will forever remain a mystery although many believe that Ludwig’s father Johann is responsible. He may have lied about his son’s birth year to ensure he could enjoy the status of child prodigy a little longer.
