Two artists playing solo simultaneously: it seems a contradiction in terms, but for Johannes Brahms his Double Concerto for violin and cello is primarily an affectionate look back at the baroque concerto grosso. At least, that was the idea, because from the very first note the music bursts with soothing romance and the joy of the delicious interplay between the eminent master violinist Pinchas Zukerman and his wife, the formidable cellist Amanda Forsyth. The four movements of Felix Mendelssohn’s spectacular Symphony No. 4 resound with yet more energy: it is a vibrant keepsake of his travels through Italy, full of boundless joie de vivre.
