‘Boston Symphony Chamber Players’

Founded in 1964, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players are one of the world’s most renowned chamber music ensembles. The best of the string and woodwinds sections of the Boston Symphony Orchestra present a richly layered concert. When you think of a classical work for chamber ensemble, Schubert’s Octet readily comes to mind. Whatever its F major key might suggest, the work was written at a time when the composer was already suffering from an illness that would prove fatal, and conveys a symphonic dimension that bears witness to the composer’s artistic ambitions. Schubert’s Octet is complemented by Britten’s Phantasy Quartet, an early piece that exalts the combination of solo oboe and string trio.
