Bozar Next Generation

“A young piano player who effortlessly links baroque to the most complex avant-garde structures and casually also tries his hand at highly-refined improvisation.” (Jazz Brussels)

During the Bach Heritage Festival, pianist Bram De Looze will showcase the extent of his improvisational talent on the straight-strung Barenboim-Maene concert grand. The instrument’s transparent sound is eminently suited to the subtle, refined style of this jazz pianist.

Jazz and especially jazz improvisation has a reputation of testing the boundaries of the familiar, and rightfully so. But good musicians never improvise randomly, choosing instead to rely on their solid knowledge of and respect for the past when improvising. And Bram De Looze is an outstanding musician. He combines improvisation with a healthy curiosity, studying the best keyboard music of the past and present, whether classical music or jazz. For the Piano e Forte project he improvised on replicas of historic pianofortes, from an eighteenth-century Anton Walter to a nineteenth-century Pleyel and Erard. But he feels equally in his element when improvising on the straight-strung Barenboim-Maene concert grand, another instrument with roots in the rich history of piano manufacturing. For his impro set during the Bach Heritage Festival, De Looze delves into the works of the master himself.
